Poet: Noor Hindi
Colonizers write about flowers.
I tell you about children throwing rocks at Israeli tanks
seconds before becoming daisies.
I want to be like those poets who care about the moon.
Palestinians don’t see the moon from jail cells and prisons.
It’s so beautiful, the moon.
They’re so beautiful, the flowers.
I pick flowers for my dead father when I’m sad.
He watches Al Jazeera all day.
I wish Jessica would stop texting me Happy Ramadan.
I know I’m American because when I walk into a room something dies.
Metaphors about death are for poets who think ghosts care about sound.
When I die, I promise to haunt you forever.
One day, I’ll write about the flowers like we own them.
Current Events:
On October 16, a six-year old Palestinian-American Muslim boy was stabbed to death in Illinois. The police say the murder was borne out of hatred from the Israel-Hamas war. And according to the Anti-Defamation League, hate crimes against Jewish Americans have skyrocketed sinc the war began.
Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are nothing new in the United States. Anti-Muslim sentiment in America has its roots in 19th century; anti-Semitism in America is even older. And the conflict between Israel and Palestine has been going on since the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. In order to completely understand these issues, it is important to recognize that anti-Semitism and Islamophobia have different forms: outright hate crimes, yes, but also micro-aggressions, systemic hierarchies, and implicit biases. The alarming rise in hate crimes against people due to their religion is extremely important to be aware of, especially in light of the tension between Israel and Palestine.
If you would like to contribute to the fight against anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim violence, check out the Anti-Defamation League, Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ispu.org), or islamophobia.org (an organization dedicated to reporting and reducing anti-Muslim attacks in the United States).
